Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is well known for its modern education, but these days it is in discussions regarding the admission of foreign students. While at one time students from more than 30 countries were studying in AMU, now students from some countries are taking admission here and studying. In the last few years, there has been a record decline in the number of foreign students studying here.

Foreign students in AMU are more inclined towards PhD than graduation and post graduation. This shows that AMU still remains an attractive option in the field of higher education. At present 170 students from 26 countries are studying in AMU. Most of these students are from Yemen, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. Among other countries, America, Iran, Iraq, Nepal, Palestine, Nigeria and Sudan are prominent. However, the decreasing number of students is a worrying situation for AMU.

Advisor of International Students Room of AMU, Prof. Syed Ali Naveed said that there are many reasons behind this decline, including the difficulty of the visa process, changes in the global education scenario and other socio-economic reasons. He said that the university is taking active steps for improvement in this direction. AMU administration has announced several schemes to attract international students. This includes measures like better publicity, assistance in simplified visa process and providing better facilities to students.
When were there the highest number of foreign students?
The number of foreign students in AMU was at its highest level in 2019-20. At that time, a total of 616 students were studying in the university, which included 462 males and 154 females. But since then there is a continuous decline in the number of foreign students. This number will come down to 178 in 2023-24.

- Hostel problem:There is no separate hostel facility for foreign students, due to which they face difficulty in living.

If we talk about 2014, at that time there were 324 foreign students in AMU. Of these, 229 were men and 95 were women. The environment in the university at that time was very diverse and culturally rich. Foreign students learned and shared the cuisine, language and traditions of different countries.

According to AMU administration, no new rules have been implemented for foreign students. Pro. Syed Nawaz Ali Zaidi said that efforts are being made to provide maximum facilities to foreign students.
